Cirith Ungol è stata una band heavy metal californiana formatasi nel 1972 e sciolta nel maggio 1992. Il gruppo ha attinto a influenze provenienti da altri gruppi metal come Black Sabbath e Thin Lizzy, oltre che dagli Iggy and the Stooges. Il loro album di debutto, *Frost and Fire*, era più vicino ad un ibrido tra hard rock e heavy metal degli anni '70 con canzoni scritte dal bassista e chitarrista Greg Lindstrom e dal batterista Robert Garven. A partire da *King of the Dead* in poi, hanno suonato un genere di doom metal influenzato dal progressive rock, con canzoni principalmente scritte dal vocalist Tim Baker. Cirith Ungol è considerata una delle band pionieristiche del doom metal, con un sound oscuro e epico che ha influenzato numerose altre band nel genere.
