La sua carriera inizia negli anni '60, periodo in cui si afferma come figura chiave del movimento di protesta americano. Canzoni come *Blowin' in the Wind* e *The Times They Are A-Changin'* diventano inni dei movimenti pacifisti e per i diritti civili.
